Light in the Piazza, "Statues and Stones"

Back in 2006, a show appeared on Broadway that brought back the romantic side of theatre, calling back to when musicals were sung in an exquisite manner. "Light in the Piazza" stars Kelli O'Hara, Victoria Clark, and Matthew Morrison in a story about love, Italy, and family. By looking at the 2006 Tony Performance, one sees some excellent singing traits and habits for performance. If anything can be derived out of the actor's performance here is the value of a smooth line. Kelli O'Hara delievers a warm, smooth sound in flowing phrases of music. On top of that, one easily can hear how she moves the sound forward in her mouth to produce such a wonderful sound. From watching this video, I tend to believe that this sound germinates from two key traits used on Kelli O'Hara's part: smiling and opening one's mouth wide. These practices along with a well grounded breath support shows why exceptional singers perform on Broadway.
